Microneedling, a Trend with Staying Power

Microneedling has been on the market for a few years and has gone through growing pains, reviews and improvements.  This is one treatment we feel has greatly improved and if done properly can achieve beautiful results. When researching microneedling you should ask the following three questions.

  1. What device do you use? There are microneedling pens/stamps and rollers on the market. The pen offers the safest technique with a straight up and down entry point which doesn’t tear the skin like a roller can.  It also is consistent in the pressure and doesn’t rely on the operator.
  2. Is it a medical facility? This is a medical treatment as you are inducing injury to the skin to spark collagen regeneration. Because of this there is always a risk.  The environment must be clean and safe. The needles must be sterile and never used multiple times. Have your provider open the needle in front of you. The provider should be licensed to perform this service.
  3. Ask about the products? One of the benefits of microneedling is the ability to drive product into the dermis to enhance the healing process. Some products are not safe to use and can cause severe allergic reactions. The most popular and safe product is Hyaluronic Acid which can be found in your body naturally. Another alternative is PRP, your own platelet rich plasma.

When done properly the results are skin tightening, smoothing of fine scars and strength marks, pore size reduction and diminishing of  fine wrinkles. Microneedling works great for sunken areas on the skin caused by acne or chickenpox. It can also be performed on areas other than the face such as neck, chest, abdomen or other areas where there might be a scar.

It is important to understand that one treatment will not give you significant results. This is a collagen building treatments therefore, the results are slow and will build over weeks and even months.  The minimum recommendation is 3 treatments spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. There is little down time. You will be red for a day or two but can wear makeup the day after treatment. Our patients have been thrilled with the results.

“I had my first session of micro needling at Schenden’s spa and this could not have been a better first time experience. My esthetician was Poly, she informed me about every aspect of the procedure and more, there were no surprises other than how wonderful my face looks afterward. I could really tell a difference in my skin. My skin became firmer and regained its elasticity. I could tell the fine lines were visibly reduced. I can’t wait for my second session.”
