Over the last year we have seen several different skin conditions that are related to face
coverings such as masks or face shields. We have spoken to our professionals here at
Schenden’s Medical Day Spa and we can help you to better identify and treat these skin
conditions. Our professionals have been treating patients consistently and we would like to
help you identify what your skin is experiencing. Here are some tips and tricks for treating
Maskne and/or Maskitis.
The first step is to identify what your skin is experiencing There are two common
conditions maskne and maskitis which can be confusing and sometimes diagnosed incorrectly.
Maskitis is present if you are noticing more of a rash, small bumps, redness,
inflammation and dry, flaky skin on your face and outside of the mask area.
Maskne is along the lines of “acne” but typically occurs in the same area where the mask
would lay on your face. Maskne is clogged pores with oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells
on your skin. But what makes it “maskne” is the mask or face shield pressing on the skin
and blocking your pores. Masks may cause changes to our skin’s PH level, resulting in
skin irritation from the humidity and moisture trapped. The constant rubbing of a mask
against your face can lead to chafing & redness.
It is important to know exactly what your skin is experiencing. Using acne-based
products on maskitis can make the situation worse. When we asked our Aesthetician
Poly what she was seeing this is what she said. “I have 1 or 2 clients a day coming in to
be treated with maskne or maskitis, asking for guidance and prevention.” You are not
alone with feeling like your skin is having a tough time adjusting to the mask.
The professionals at Schenden’s Medical Day Spa are here to help you. We offer
complimentary skin consultations and can develop the correct treatment plan to treat
either condition. Call today to set up your appointment and be ready to show beautiful
