A Chemical Peel isn’t as scary as it sounds, we promise!

The words “Chemical Peel” can be intimidating if you don’t understand the treatment process. We are here to help you understand the procedure and the benefits. We provide multiple strengths of chemical peels and a highly qualified Aesthetician who will assess your skin and determine the proper strength to meet your aesthetic goals.

Chemical peels often get confused with the common skin care mask.  A mask is typically applied to the skin, allowed to sit/dry and then peeled off.  They are often thick and can be done in a spa or at home. A medical grade chemical peel is a clear acid (such as glycolic or lactic) that is applied to the skin, and left to dry. These should only be applied by a licensed Aesthetician in a medical setting.  The acid breaks down the old skin and the peeling or shedding of the skin usually occurs 2 to 3 days after the treatment. The amount of peeling and days is determined by the strength, and desired outcome. The lower strengths produce a gentle peel. Higher strengths have a more aggressive peel. All peels encourage new skin to grow under the old, and when complete, you will see an improved complexion. Chemical peels can lighten brown spot and improve your skin tone leaving it brighter. The stronger strength peels can help reduce acne scars and the appearance of brown spots caused by sun damage.

Don’t let the word chemical intimidate you. We offer complimentary consultations on all our skincare treatments.  Call today to schedule your appointment and enjoy brighter beautiful fresh skin. 248-524-3622

Cold weather skin care tips that you can do at home.

The winter months can be a challenge to keep our skin hydrated.  As licensed aestheticians at Schenden’s Medical Day Spa, we have a wide range of products and services that can help your skin stay hydrated during the winter months.  In addition, we also like to send our client’s home with things they can do on their own to help combat dry skin. Our top 5 home tips are:

  1. Invest in a humidifier or even boil water to add moisture to your home. The dry indoor air pulls the moisture out of our skin. Having one in your bedroom exposes your skin to much needed moisture for the most consistent number of hours while you sleep.
  2. Avoid dehydrating drinks like caffeine and alcohol.  Our hydration is already low and these drinks actually force more water out of your system.
  3. Drink the recommended 6 to 8 glasses of water a day.  The moisture in the winter is at an all-time low therefore, you must physically replenish it.
  4. Avoid hot showers, we are all guilty of this especially on a -10 degree day. Who doesn’t enjoy a hot shower to escape the cold but this is actually striping the natural oils out of our skin. A warm shower limited to 5 to 10 minutes followed by a good body moisturizer is best.
  5. Add vitamin rich foods to your diet such as Vitamin E which can be found in nuts such as walnuts and green leafy vegetables like spinach and broccoli.

The good news is spring will come but in the meantime stay hydrated.  If you would like to learn more about how to treat your skin, we offer complimentary consultations.  Let us help you love your skin again. Call today to schedule your appointment. 248-524-3622.

Dry Winter Skin? Change your facial skincare routine!

Michigan winters can be brutal on our skin. The cold temperature, harsh winds and dry indoor heat leaves us with dry dehydrated skin. Adding extra moisturizers is a must to bring our skin back to life.
Our faces are exposed daily and require the most attention. Your skincare routine should be adjusted to ensure your products are providing the extra moisture needed during the cold weather months. This is true for even your facial cleansing routine. I use Glowbiotics MD cleanser to start. This probiotic revitalizing gel removes makeup, dirt and oil gently. It also soothes the appearance of redness, firms and brightens while it hydrates the skin.
Many of us need to change or add to our current moisturizer in the winter to make up for the dryness. Glowbiotics MD Probiotic Multi Brightening Anti-aging Cream twice a day provides a much needed barrier replenishing lipids in a moisturizing shea butter. In addition to a great moisturizer, I recommend my clients add the Probiotic Hydra Glow Cream Oil over the top of the moisturizer. This gives your skin a healthy glow and added protection for the day.
It is very important to also have SPF protection even in the winter! Glowbiotics MD tinted SPF 30 is a perfect choice. This has a hint of color, SPF protection with broad spectrum UVA/UVB. In addition it is non-irritating with antioxidants while serving as a smoothing make up primer. The Glowbiotics MD product line is created free of phthalates, sulfates, FD&C dyes parabens and mineral oil.
We provide complimentary product consultations, bring your current products into us and we will discuss what is best for your skin. Whatever the weather, we want your skin to glow. Schedule your skincare analysis today for a beautiful tomorrow. 248-524-3622.

Facials – follow the seasons

I still remember getting my first facial. I viewed it as a luxury service that I received as a gift.  When I went in for the treatment, the aesthetician asked me about my skincare routine and what I did outside of washing and daily lotions.  My answer was “Nothing. This is my first facial”. (I was in my thirties). The next question she asked me has stayed with me for years. She asked “How often do you get your hair treated?”   This one I had an answer for as I proudly said “every 6 weeks!”. Her next question changed my skincare routine from that day forward. She asked “why would you take care of your hair every six weeks and not take care of the skin on your face and neck?” Wow I thought, why wouldn’t I? I had beautiful hair but my skin was starting to age and I was neglecting it.  Facials are so important to the skin to ensure proper cleansing, exfoliation, extraction (if needed) and hydration. Her recommendation for me was that if you cannot come once a month you should always at least follow the seasons and come at each season change. Our climate changes and environmental pollution causes our skin to react and causes changes in our skin that need attention.  Some seasons I was dry, some oily. Finding a quality aesthetician to help your skin stay healthy and glow for every season is key.

Thankfully our aestheticians are fully trained and take skincare seriously.  Don’t wait for that special occasion make facials a part of your routine. This season is a great reason! Call today to schedule your appointment 248-524-3622.  Your skin will thank you!

How to achieve maximum results with a skin resurfacing treatment.

How to achieve maximum results with a skin resurfacing treatment.

Laser rejuvenation and resurfacing is popular for many reasons. It offers a solution to wrinkles, fine lines, post-traumatic scars, acne scars, sun spots, freckles and/or aging and damaged skin. Many lasers perform best when completed in a series.  However, if you are looking for results in a single treatment, the ActiveFX Laser by Lumenis® is the laser for you.  ActiveFX fractional laser can improve a wide range of skin conditions while refreshing the overall appearance of the skin.

Every patient’s skin is different, which is why a consultation is so important. It provides the opportunity to assess the patient’s condition and do a thorough evaluation of the skin. . This laser uses a high-energy beam of light that causes the skin’s upper layer to peel off and regenerate a layer of healthy new skin.  This achieves a dramatic effect; however, it does require approximately five days of downtime, as your skin will have associated redness and peeling.  You will see a reduction of wrinkles and fine lines as well as a softening of deeper lines. You will also see improved skin tone and texture and immediate contraction of the skin with reduction in pore size. Additionally it stimulates new collagen, you will see plumping of the skin up to six months after the procedure!

Winter months are the optimum time to receive your laser treatment. Call our office today to schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Clarissa Kroese or Raquel Merlini, RN and turn back the clock on your skin. 248-524-0620.

All About Lasers!

At Schenden’s Medical Day Spa we offer high quality innovative lasers/light treatments to ensure maximum results. Training is our top priority to ensure we deliver safe and consistent results every time.  Two of top services are the Photorejuvenation/IPL treatment and our Laser Hair Removal.

IPL treatments help restore your skin’s youthful appearance by targeting brown spots, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, sun damage and broken capillaries. This treatment is non-ablative which is ideal for the active lifestyle because it requires no downtime.  The broad spectrum light treats the face, chest, neck and hands virtually anywhere sun damage shows. By removing the discoloration the results show a more even skin tone with luminous looking skin. We offer free consultations that allow you to ask questions that pertain to your specific areas of concern.  The IPL is typically administered in a series of six treatments 3 to 4 weeks apart.

Our laser hair removal laser is a state of the art system that has a multi tip system allowing for faster virtually pain free treatments on larger areas such as legs and back. In addition, it offers quick effective treatments with the smaller tip for areas such as the lip or underarm.  We treat nearly any area of the body including face, legs, underarms, back and bikini’s. This service also comes with a complimentary consultations to ensure your questions are answered and the treatment is right for you. Laser Hair removal is completed in a series of 6 treatments as well spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Fall is the perfect time to start your treatment package as both of these services require your skin to be out of the sun for 6 weeks prior to your first treatment.  Remove the summer sun damage and remove the task of shaving from your daily routine.

Day versus Night Moisturizer, Learn the reasons why you may need different products

When we are young and first start using a face moisturizer, most people typically buy one product and use it both in the morning and at night. You can do this but there are advantages to using two different products. Your skin is exposed to two different environments and pairing the right product will help keep your skin’s youthful glow. We like to think of it in terms of Daytime Protect, Nighttime Correct.

Protect during the day

During the day our faces are exposed to the sun. Protection from the harmful rays must be your first priority. Daytime moisturizers must contain an SPF to protect your skin. Additionally, if you wear makeup a lighter consistency is best and allows for ease in makeup application. Many daytime lotions also come tinted which acts not only as a protectant but as your foundation as well.

Correct at night

Nighttime is an excellent time for deeper hydration and correcting your skins tone and texture. During the day your skin is exposed to air pollutants such as dust, dirt and smog bacteria. Night moisturizers are often thicker with more ingredients for healing/correcting any exposure and nourishing your skin while you sleep. Retinol is often present in a night cream. It is deactivated when exposed to sun therefore it is perfect to team with your night moisturizer. A good retinol will boost collagen production, reduce wrinkles and prevent fine lines. It can also speed cell turnover and unclog your pores which reduces acne and pore size.

The number one thing to take away is the importance of taking care of your skin and using a quality moisturizer day and night. Our skincare professionals can work with you to ensure you’re using the correct product for your skin type. We offer complimentary skincare product analysis. Simply bring in all your current products and one of our highly qualified skincare providers will review them with you and determine what is best for your skin. With thousands of products on the market it is nice to have an expert’s help. Call today to set up your free skincare consultation. 248-524-3622

Men need pedicures too!

Today’s society is appearance driven for both men and women. Women are no longer the only people wanting to look younger and well maintained. Men are working later in life and are faced with a competitive workforce. The days of just a razor, hair gel and dumbbells are gone. Men are seeking the treatment room. The Top 5 minimally invasive procedures for men are Botox, Microdermabrasion, Laser Hair Removal, Chemical Peels and Laser Skin Resurfacing. Men are also seeking general grooming such as pedicures, manicures and waxing. Feet take a beating with standing on them all day long. They are a breeding ground for bacteria, dead skin and calluses. Your feet carry stress too.

Ask yourself: When was the last time you trimmed or really cleaned beneath your toenails? When did you last scrub the bottom of your feet to get rid of any dead skin or calluses? It is easy to think of pedicures as a fluffy spa indulgence—but most importantly they are relaxing and necessary for foot health! You should also take into consideration the hygienic benefits of actually paying close attention to your feet. Benefits of a pedicure include:

       Improves foot health

       Reduces bacteria

       Eliminates foot odor

       Prevents ingrown toenails

       Relieves stress

Improves the look and feel of your feet

What separates Schenden’s Medical Day Spa from the standard nail salon is that we provide a private room for a relaxing treatment. Men are sometimes intimidated or embarrassed to go to a salon or spa that has rows of pedicure chairs filled with women. At Schenden’s Spa you are the only one in the room with your nail technician. Our unique pedicure bed will allow you to recline and place your feet in a footbath. We encourage you to disconnect from every day stress an technology and just relax. Stop neglecting your feet. Call today to schedule your pedicure. Your feet will thank you!

High Frequency Electrotherapy…. a little known treatment with big results!

High Frequency Electrotherapy is a rejuvenating treatment used in the skin care industry. High frequency is a noninvasive modality that uses a glass electrode filled with argon gas to pass a mild electrical current to the skin’s surface. The glass electrodes emit either a neon red/orange or a violet/blue light depending on the inert gas that they are equipped with. Violet/blue gas is used to treat acne prone skin while the red/orange gas is used on older/aging skin. This modality has been shown to stimulate skin cell renewal. The heat is produced by the high rate of oscillation. This treatment is a safe and gentle therapeutic skin rejuvenation, due to the gentle oscillating electrical current and offers several benefits such as:

● Enhancing circulation through oxygen
● Increasing collagen and the skin’s elasticity
● Reduces bacteria that causes acne
● Encouraging lymphatic drainage
● Improving skin care product absorption

The added benefit of a high frequency treatment is that enriched oxygen molecules are produced creating an anti-bacterial action as well as a “natural” skin warming. This causes dilation of the blood vessels underneath, enriching the skin with nutrients and hydrating volume that gives you, energized, rosy firm skin.

I often recommend this treatment for acne and to calm the skin. This is also a great add on treatment to a facial, microdermabrasion or a dermaplane appointment. Always be sure to talk with your skin care provider first to determine if high frequency is right for you.

Summer short season, no worries, get smoother, firmer skin with VelaShape® III

Most of us have a love of summer which brings sunshine, outdoor parties, wedding, graduations and more. However, summer also means warmer temperatures and less clothing covering our bodies like shorts, dresses and swimsuits.  Let’s face it most of us are not supermodels who can walk around with confidence in this clothing. An estimated 85% to 98% of women over the age of 16 have cellulite regardless of their size, shape or weight. Even the fit athlete can suffer from dimples and cellulite or a stubborn area that doesn’t respond to exercise.  For us there is the VelaShape III body contouring system.  This new technology can smooth and tighten skin and diminish the appearance of cellulite in an easy noninvasive treatment.

Velashape uses three processes to achieve the desired results.  Infrared light which directly heats the targeted area.  Bipolar frequency guides the heat for faster safe temperatures without damaging the skin and the vacuum elevates the target tissue, bringing it closer to the energy source.  A single treatment usually is complete in less than an hour depending on the size of the treated area. Most non-invasive body contouring devices are series based as is VelaShape III. It is recommended you receive 4 to 6 treatments for maximum results.   You will begin to notice improvement on the treated area right away as your skin’s surface begins to feel smoother and firmer.   Maximum results are typically seen in approximately 10 weeks.  Following your treatment regimen, it is recommended that you receive maintenance treatments every 2 to 3 months. Like all techniques, invasive or non-invasive, results vary depending on the physical condition of the skin and body. Results will last longer if you follow a balance diet and exercise regimen.

Many clients describe treatment experience as similar to a hot massage.  Our technicians work with you to ensure you are comfortable throughout the treatment.  The VelaShape treatment is safe and effective for all skin types. The treatment works with heat therefore the treated areas skin temperature will rise. You may experience a bit of tenderness and may slightly bruise post treatments. After your series is complete a maintenance program is recommended to maintain the results.

Put your shorts on with confidence this summer. We are open six days a week and offer free consultations. Our highly trained technicians will work with you to develop a treatment plan that meets your goals.
