Benefits of Cryotherapy in a Medical Spa

Benefits of Cryotherapy in a Medical Spa

Cryotherapy is the process of using Co2 to heal and calm the skin.  The Co2 is formed into a ball (aka Ice Balls). It is typically used after a glycolic chemical peel or 2% lactic peel, especially when extractions of blemishes are performed. When extracting blemishes bacteria is spread on the skin. The use of cryotherapy kills the bacteria to heal the blemishes in a very quick manner, and also prevents future break-outs. Additional benefits include:

  • Decrease inflammation
  • Decreased pain

This therapy is not only limited to use with chemical peels, but can be used as a means of disinfecting the skin and used in other facial protocols.

Day versus Night Moisturizer, Learn the reasons why you may need different products

When we are young and first start using a face moisturizer, most people typically buy one product and use it both in the morning and at night. You can do this but there are advantages to using two different products. Your skin is exposed to two different environments and pairing the right product will help keep your skin’s youthful glow. We like to think of it in terms of Daytime Protect, Nighttime Correct.

Protect during the day

During the day our faces are exposed to the sun. Protection from the harmful rays must be your first priority. Daytime moisturizers must contain an SPF to protect your skin. Additionally, if you wear makeup a lighter consistency is best and allows for ease in makeup application. Many daytime lotions also come tinted which acts not only as a protectant but as your foundation as well.

Correct at night

Nighttime is an excellent time for deeper hydration and correcting your skins tone and texture. During the day your skin is exposed to air pollutants such as dust, dirt and smog bacteria. Night moisturizers are often thicker with more ingredients for healing/correcting any exposure and nourishing your skin while you sleep. Retinol is often present in a night cream. It is deactivated when exposed to sun therefore it is perfect to team with your night moisturizer. A good retinol will boost collagen production, reduce wrinkles and prevent fine lines. It can also speed cell turnover and unclog your pores which reduces acne and pore size.

The number one thing to take away is the importance of taking care of your skin and using a quality moisturizer day and night. Our skincare professionals can work with you to ensure you’re using the correct product for your skin type. We offer complimentary skincare product analysis. Simply bring in all your current products and one of our highly qualified skincare providers will review them with you and determine what is best for your skin. With thousands of products on the market it is nice to have an expert’s help. Call today to set up your free skincare consultation. 248-524-3622

High Frequency Electrotherapy…. a little known treatment with big results!

High Frequency Electrotherapy is a rejuvenating treatment used in the skin care industry. High frequency is a noninvasive modality that uses a glass electrode filled with argon gas to pass a mild electrical current to the skin’s surface. The glass electrodes emit either a neon red/orange or a violet/blue light depending on the inert gas that they are equipped with. Violet/blue gas is used to treat acne prone skin while the red/orange gas is used on older/aging skin. This modality has been shown to stimulate skin cell renewal. The heat is produced by the high rate of oscillation. This treatment is a safe and gentle therapeutic skin rejuvenation, due to the gentle oscillating electrical current and offers several benefits such as:

● Enhancing circulation through oxygen
● Increasing collagen and the skin’s elasticity
● Reduces bacteria that causes acne
● Encouraging lymphatic drainage
● Improving skin care product absorption

The added benefit of a high frequency treatment is that enriched oxygen molecules are produced creating an anti-bacterial action as well as a “natural” skin warming. This causes dilation of the blood vessels underneath, enriching the skin with nutrients and hydrating volume that gives you, energized, rosy firm skin.

I often recommend this treatment for acne and to calm the skin. This is also a great add on treatment to a facial, microdermabrasion or a dermaplane appointment. Always be sure to talk with your skin care provider first to determine if high frequency is right for you.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning, is an excellent exfoliating treatment that is used as an alternative or in conjunction with a chemical peel or microdermabrasion. It is a good choice for anyone who has fine facial hair, extremely sensitive skin, redness or rosacea, or visible facial veins. The dermaplaning treatment is done with the use of a blade to gently exfoliate the outer layer of dead skin cells and remove fine facial hair commonly known as “peach fuzz”. A noticeable improvement is immediate with smoother texture and fresh skin appearance. Hair returns normally and will not become coarser because of the treatment.

Removing this outer layer skin also allows products to penetrate more readily into the deeper layers. Physicians recommend this treatment to prepare the skin for medical procedures such as laser treatments or deep chemical peels.

Dermaplaning is most often used on patients with rough or dry skin, superficial hyperpigmentation, mild acne scarring, or fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment results in a more refined, smooth, “glowing” appearance without any down time.

Most commonly asked questions:

Why doesn’t the hair grow back thicker?
Fine facial “peach fuzz” is one of the two types of hair that everyone has. It’s called vellous hair and is the fine translucent hair that you can see if you look closely on women’s face, chest and back. The other type of hair is terminal hair, which is the coarser hair you see on the head, brows, and on the lower face in men. Cutting vellous hair does not make it grow in thicker or feel stubbly afterwards.

How often is this procedure performed?
The normal skin growth cycle is around 30 days and since dermaplaning removes about 2-3 weeks-worth of dead skin cells, it’s best to wait about 3-4 weeks between treatments.

Can dermaplaning be performed in the same visit as a chemical peel?
A chemical peel done immediately after dermaplaning is an excellent way to make sure that the peel penetrates deeper and more evenly. Lactic acid peels will hydrate and further exfoliate dry and normal skin while a glycolic acid peel is strong enough to combine with dermaplaning for oily skin.

What skin types/conditions can be treated?
All skin types are candidates for dermaplaning. The only skin that shouldn’t be treated with dermaplaning is skin with active bacterial spread or skin injury.

Don’t let the word “Peel” Frighten you away…

What is a “peel”? The word “peel” may seem a bit intimidating or scary to those people who have yet to experience the treatment and witness the amazing benefits. Don’t let the name scare you away… once you try a facial peel you may be hooked for life. Sun exposure, acne or just getting older can leave your skin tone uneven, wrinkled, spotted or even scarred. If you desire smoother and younger looking skin, consider a chemical peel, which smooths the texture of your skin by removing the damaged outer layers.

A chemical peel, is one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin. Although chemical peels are used most commonly on the face, they can also be used to improve the skin on your neck and hands. Clients seek chemical peels to improve acne scars, aging spots, wrinkles, irregular pigmentation, rough patches of skin, scarring or even sun damage. Following a facial peel, most people leave with beautiful glowing skin, however occasionally there may be a slight redness that will quickly dissipate.

Now that you know what a facial peel can do for your skin, it’s important to understand what they cannot do. They do not treat deep facial lines, in that case you may want to consider facial injectables that boost collagen production or CoolTouch CT3 Plus treatments that boost collagen production. Peels do not assist with broken capillaries, if you experience an issue with that you would consider Telangitron. For deep scarring or burns you could consider scar revision, CO2 Deep Fractional Laser treatments or dermabrasion – all of which you would be handled by Dr Schenden and not in the Spa.

Chemical peels do wonders for the skin, so don’t let the word “peel” frighten you away; instead, consider scheduling an appointment for a skin evaluation to learn about all of the chemical peels we offer at the spa (Salicylic, Jessner, Glycolic, Mybody, Lactic, Microdermabrasion, Probiotic, Dermaplaning).

Microdermabrasion – don’t try it at home!

Microdermabrasion is one of the easiest and most effective anti-aging treatments you can get and has been around since the ‘80’s. It has multiple benefits: softens fine lines and wrinkles, helps to smooth coarsely textured skin, decreases the appearance of scarring and pore size and reduces superficial hyper-pigmentation, also known as age spots. Additionally microdermabrasion makes it easier for high quality skin care products to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and help build collagen, which is responsible for skins youthful appearance.

True microdermabrasion should be done by a professional not at home for several reasons. First, the home kits are basically a scrub for the face that is often too abrasive and can irritate the skin. Secondly, when receiving microdermabrasion at the spa, instead of using a home kit, the Aesthetician will determine and control the depth of exfoliation by the strength of the vacuum and crystal flow for maximum safety. Thirdly, the Aesthetician will be able to determine the number of passes to make over your skin for optimal results. Often only two passes are made, but sometimes a third pass may be necessary if your skin is thick enough or if there is an area that needs special attention, like a scar or brown spot.

Microdermabrasion has many benefits for both men and women, which is why it has been such a popular and trusted treatment option for more than three decades. Many men seek microdermabrasion because it can dramatically help improve problems with ingrown hairs. For more information on microdermabrasion contact 248-524-3622 to schedule a consultation with one of the professionally trained Aestheticians.

Pamper your face and get a facial!

The right facial can cleanse your face, clear up skin problems and help you moisturize your way into a healthy (sun-free) glow. A standard facial typically consists of four steps: cleansing, exfoliating, massaging of the neck, face and shoulders and applying a mask for your skin type. Many clients take the facial to another level and opt for a Power European Facial, which includes an element of dermaplaning or microdermabrasion for an added anti-aging result.

The Aesthetician will first perform the cleansing portion of the facial, which consists of removing any makeup and dirt from the skin. Next, the exfoliation process helps to slough off any dead skin cells and preps the skin for extractions (don’t worry that sounds more intimidating than it truly is). The best and most relaxing portion of the facial – the massage portion helps calm and pamper the client all with a medical benefit of lymphatic drainage, lifting or pressure points. The next phase of the facial is the mask portion which drives more nutrients into the skin and can soothe and calm the skin as well. The final step is the application of the much needed and hopefully staple in your skincare routine, a high quality moisturizer with SPF.

Remember, it is never too early (or too late) to start taking care of yourself and your skin. It is much easier to hold back the hands of time then try turn them back later. Call 248-524-3622 for more information on facials or other skin treatment options.
