High Frequency Electrotherapy…. a little known treatment with big results!

High Frequency Electrotherapy is a rejuvenating treatment used in the skin care industry. High frequency is a noninvasive modality that uses a glass electrode filled with argon gas to pass a mild electrical current to the skin’s surface. The glass electrodes emit either a neon red/orange or a violet/blue light depending on the inert gas that they are equipped with. Violet/blue gas is used to treat acne prone skin while the red/orange gas is used on older/aging skin. This modality has been shown to stimulate skin cell renewal. The heat is produced by the high rate of oscillation. This treatment is a safe and gentle therapeutic skin rejuvenation, due to the gentle oscillating electrical current and offers several benefits such as:

● Enhancing circulation through oxygen
● Increasing collagen and the skin’s elasticity
● Reduces bacteria that causes acne
● Encouraging lymphatic drainage
● Improving skin care product absorption

The added benefit of a high frequency treatment is that enriched oxygen molecules are produced creating an anti-bacterial action as well as a “natural” skin warming. This causes dilation of the blood vessels underneath, enriching the skin with nutrients and hydrating volume that gives you, energized, rosy firm skin.

I often recommend this treatment for acne and to calm the skin. This is also a great add on treatment to a facial, microdermabrasion or a dermaplane appointment. Always be sure to talk with your skin care provider first to determine if high frequency is right for you.

What are CoolTouch treatments and who gets them?

Recently over lunch with friends, the discussion turned to several anti-aging options that help recapture a youthful appearance and lift a sagging neckline. Besides a quality skincare line which is a must at any age – a simple answer, CoolTouch CT3 Plus treatments. For those men and women who are seeking a non-invasive anti-aging treatment to improve their skin and appearance, laser rejuvenation treatments are something they may want to seriously consider.

The CoolTouch laser treatment, known as CoolBreeze™, is the “gold standard” of care for wrinkle reduction, acne and acne scarring. This laser treatment targets the layers of skin where collagen is formed and diminishes the appearance of many age-related skin concerns including wrinkles, lines, acne scars, and accomplishes this without injury to the skin’s surface. Best of all, with no downtime after treatment, you can resume regular activities immediately after the procedure.

CoolBreeze treatments are completely non-invasive, as the laser light passes harmlessly through the upper layers of the skin to heat and stimulate the cells deep below the surface that produce natural collagen which adds firmness, and elasticity to the skin. The collagen and elastin fibers continue to multiply after your treatment, and you will continue to see collagen stimulation for several months. The CoolBreeze laser treatment can be performed on any facial area – around the eyes, mouth, cheeks, and chin, as well as the neck & decollete.

It is easy to see why there is such a Buzz about CoolTouch CT3 Plus laser treatments – the amazing results speak for themselves and can be life changing. A consultation will help determine your skin’s needs. This treatment can be safely used in conjunction with Dermaplane, Microderm, Chemical Peels, Botox, and Fillers to maximize patients overall results.

Summer short season, no worries, get smoother, firmer skin with VelaShape® III

Most of us have a love of summer which brings sunshine, outdoor parties, wedding, graduations and more. However, summer also means warmer temperatures and less clothing covering our bodies like shorts, dresses and swimsuits.  Let’s face it most of us are not supermodels who can walk around with confidence in this clothing. An estimated 85% to 98% of women over the age of 16 have cellulite regardless of their size, shape or weight. Even the fit athlete can suffer from dimples and cellulite or a stubborn area that doesn’t respond to exercise.  For us there is the VelaShape III body contouring system.  This new technology can smooth and tighten skin and diminish the appearance of cellulite in an easy noninvasive treatment.

Velashape uses three processes to achieve the desired results.  Infrared light which directly heats the targeted area.  Bipolar frequency guides the heat for faster safe temperatures without damaging the skin and the vacuum elevates the target tissue, bringing it closer to the energy source.  A single treatment usually is complete in less than an hour depending on the size of the treated area. Most non-invasive body contouring devices are series based as is VelaShape III. It is recommended you receive 4 to 6 treatments for maximum results.   You will begin to notice improvement on the treated area right away as your skin’s surface begins to feel smoother and firmer.   Maximum results are typically seen in approximately 10 weeks.  Following your treatment regimen, it is recommended that you receive maintenance treatments every 2 to 3 months. Like all techniques, invasive or non-invasive, results vary depending on the physical condition of the skin and body. Results will last longer if you follow a balance diet and exercise regimen.

Many clients describe treatment experience as similar to a hot massage.  Our technicians work with you to ensure you are comfortable throughout the treatment.  The VelaShape treatment is safe and effective for all skin types. The treatment works with heat therefore the treated areas skin temperature will rise. You may experience a bit of tenderness and may slightly bruise post treatments. After your series is complete a maintenance program is recommended to maintain the results.

Put your shorts on with confidence this summer. We are open six days a week and offer free consultations. Our highly trained technicians will work with you to develop a treatment plan that meets your goals.

Microneedling, a Trend with Staying Power

Microneedling has been on the market for a few years and has gone through growing pains, reviews and improvements.  This is one treatment we feel has greatly improved and if done properly can achieve beautiful results. When researching microneedling you should ask the following three questions.

  1. What device do you use? There are microneedling pens/stamps and rollers on the market. The pen offers the safest technique with a straight up and down entry point which doesn’t tear the skin like a roller can.  It also is consistent in the pressure and doesn’t rely on the operator.
  2. Is it a medical facility? This is a medical treatment as you are inducing injury to the skin to spark collagen regeneration. Because of this there is always a risk.  The environment must be clean and safe. The needles must be sterile and never used multiple times. Have your provider open the needle in front of you. The provider should be licensed to perform this service.
  3. Ask about the products? One of the benefits of microneedling is the ability to drive product into the dermis to enhance the healing process. Some products are not safe to use and can cause severe allergic reactions. The most popular and safe product is Hyaluronic Acid which can be found in your body naturally. Another alternative is PRP, your own platelet rich plasma.

When done properly the results are skin tightening, smoothing of fine scars and strength marks, pore size reduction and diminishing of  fine wrinkles. Microneedling works great for sunken areas on the skin caused by acne or chickenpox. It can also be performed on areas other than the face such as neck, chest, abdomen or other areas where there might be a scar.

It is important to understand that one treatment will not give you significant results. This is a collagen building treatments therefore, the results are slow and will build over weeks and even months.  The minimum recommendation is 3 treatments spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. There is little down time. You will be red for a day or two but can wear makeup the day after treatment. Our patients have been thrilled with the results.

“I had my first session of micro needling at Schenden’s spa and this could not have been a better first time experience. My esthetician was Poly, she informed me about every aspect of the procedure and more, there were no surprises other than how wonderful my face looks afterward. I could really tell a difference in my skin. My skin became firmer and regained its elasticity. I could tell the fine lines were visibly reduced. I can’t wait for my second session.”

Introducing Our New Body Contouring System. VelaShape® III

What is VelaShape III

VelaShape III is a non-invasive body contouring treatment. This treatment shrinks fat cells, smooths cellulite, improves circulation, and results in circumferential reduction. VelaShape uses infrared light which directly heats the targeted area. Bipolar radio frequency guides the heat for faster safe temperatures without damaging the skin and the vacuum elevates the target issue, bringing it closer to the energy source.  These three modalities work together to provide dermal and sub dermal heating, enhancing circulation and lymphatic drainage. Get the figure you’ve been dreaming of with a series of affordable treatments.

How many treatments do I need?

VelaShape III is completed in a series. The number of treatments vary depending on the desired results. Typically skin tightening/toning requires 3 to 4 treatments. Cellulite reduction typically requires at least 6 treatments.

When can I see improvement?

You will begin to notice gradual improvement of the treated area right away as your skin’s surface starts to feel smoother and firmer. Over time you will also notice a smaller circumference throughout the treated area as well as a reduction in the appearance of cellulite.  Best results will be seen at about 10 weeks.

Are there any side effects?

The VelaShape III treatment is safe and effective for all skin types. The treatment works with heat therefore the treated areas skin temperature will rise. You may experience a bit of tenderness and may slightly bruise post treatments.   It is important to be well hydrated before and after treatment.

Are the results permanent?

Following your treatment regimen, it is recommended that you receive maintenance treatments every 2 to 3 months.  Like all techniques, invasive or non-invasive, results vary depending on the physical condition of the skin and body. Results will last longer if you follow a balanced diet and exercise regimen.

Can I have tanned skin?

Because your skin is being heated it is best not be have a new tan. When you tan your skin is dry and damaged therefore adding heat to it can cause further damage. You should also not be spray tanned due to the spray clogging the machine.

Feel the confidence that comes from knowing you look your best. Call today for your free consultation at our spa located in Troy, MI. 248-524-3622

Can I get a massage if I am receiving treatment for cancer?

Posted March 16th, 2018 by Schendens Med Spa and filed in Massage Therapy
Comments Off on Can I get a massage if I am receiving treatment for cancer?

In today’s world unfortunately cancer is a word we hear too often. Although treatments are always improving the process can not only be stressful on your body but also your mind. It is often hard to relax or find relief. Oncology massage is a specialized massage that provides some relief to the many side effects that can occur during treatment. Oncology Massage is provided by a certified oncology massage therapist. It is very important that the massage therapist is educated in the protocols when involving the treatments of cancer such a radiation, chemotherapy and surgery.

Always consult with your doctor and receive his/her written permission if currently undergoing treatment. There are certain contraindications to consider before massage can be administered and the more the massage therapist knows about a patient, the more effective the treatment can be.

Side effects caused by conventional treatments may be reduced by providing relaxation to the body reducing stress, anxiety, nausea, fatigue and many see improvement in sleep and digestion. Through a variety of types of pressure and touch, massage may also help to increase mobility and relief of stiffness and pain.

If you have completed treatment and in good health, the massage therapist will go over your health and treatment history and adjust the session to keep you safe. Together, you and your therapist will agree on goals for the session that insures the continued healing of your body.

I am fully trained in oncology massage and enjoy helping individuals through this difficult time. Set up a free consultation today and let me help you on the road to recovery.

Comments Off on Out with the bad habits and into the New Year with Beautiful skin

The New Year gives us all a chance to start fresh. It’s time to make a commitment to our skin. We all ensure our hair is styled, colored and cut, our nails are trim, buffed and polished but what have we done for our skin? Run out the door without sunscreen? Fall asleep with our makeup on or still using the same products we did when we were in our twenties? It’s time for a change.

AM Prep –apply topical protectants such as antioxidants, hydrants and sunscreen, Note vulnerable areas, our hands and décolleté, these areas need sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher!

PM Prep– wash away environmental toxins and impurities in addition to products worn throughout the day. Apply the appropriate pm products.

Must have products include growth factors, retinols, and vitamin C to boost collagen production, skin elasticity and thickness.

Remember to hydrate, get at least 8 hours a sleep per night, eat clean to avoid breakouts and decrease salt to prevent puffiness.

Vinylux vs Shellac

Posted April 17th, 2017 by Schendens Med Spa and filed in Shellac Manicure
Comments Off on Vinylux vs Shellac

Nail polish is the critical component needed for a girl to get a manicure. With the popularity of nail design soaring more so today, than ever before, the competitive market for polish has sky rocketed. That being said, your average woman wants to schedule an appointment to indulge herself at the spa, she is already overwhelmed by the impressive color wall that you have to offer her, but has no insight on the product available to her. You ask her, “shellac, vinylux, or polish?” a quizzical look will pop up onto her face, and she will just agree with the first option you presented her with. What is the difference?

Vinylux
Vinylux provides one full week of wear, enhanced durability, and self adhering Color Coat followed by Vinylux Top Coat to shield and protect the Color Coat, for a chip-free, high-shine wear. It dries in 8 ½ minutes, and removes easily with a moisturizing acetone remover. There is no need for a base coat, and it will not stain healthy nails. For dry or peeling nails, a thin layer of RidgeFX will be applied prior to Vinylux application. Vinylux is designed to work like a regular polish; no lamp needed, and colors can be mixed together to create new colors.
Shellac
Shellac provides 14+ day wear, high gloss shine, zero dry time, and removal in 5 minutes with a moisturizing acetone remover. Shellac 14+ day nail color has a three step process.

  • Shellac Base Coat is applied and cured for 10 seconds in a LED or UV lamp.
  • Shellac Color Coat is applied and cured for 1 minute in a LED lamp, or 2 minutes in a UV lamp.
  • Shellac Top Coats (2) should be cured for 1 minute in a LED lamp, or 2 minutes in a UV lamp, and can be used with additives, nail art, and embellishments.

For those sensitive to nail products, all Shellac products are formulated without toluene, camphor, formaldehyde, phthalates (DBP), formaldehyde resin, xylene, or methyl ethyl ketone (MEK).

Shellac has an effortless glide on application, 14+ days of high shine, and high performance, with no nail damage. Removal time is based on the Shellac Top Coat used during application; Express Shellac can be removed in 5 minutes, original Shellac in 8 minutes, and Duraforce in 15 minutes.

The next time you’re thinking about getting your nails done, consider making your appointment here at Schenden’s Medical Day Spa in Troy, you will not be disappointed in the selection of product we have to offer, our service and the quiet, professional atmosphere.

Interested in a Chemical Peel? Do your homework!

Comments Off on Interested in a Chemical Peel? Do your homework!

As an aesthetic registered nurse and licensed aesthetician I can’t stress enough the importance of good skin care and finding the right treatment provider. Especially if you’re considering having a chemical peel. My number one recommendation is for clients to do their homework. There are multiple spas in any given area but it is important to find a Medical Spa which requires a Medical Director to ensure that you are receiving a medical grade product and oversight.

Schedule a Consultation
I like to meet with a prospective patient and discuss their goals in order to determine which chemical peel will be right for their skin. A chemical peel improves skin texture, pigmentation and can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. All consultations are free of charge and allow me to understand your aesthetic goals and assess your skin.

Construct a Plan
We will discuss the amount of time necessary and what type of peel I would recommend based on desired outcome aggressive/ cautious and skin type. Lastly, what will be needed at home? To achieve optimum results you need to use the right skincare products both before and after the peel. These products work in conjunction with the peel.

Check Your Schedule
If you are planning on a more aggressive peel, my suggestion to all my patients is to not schedule any special events until your skin is finished with the peeling process. Your skin will usually start to shed 2-3 days after treatment and can last up to 7, depending on the type/strength of the chemical peel. During the peeling process, the only products you’ll want to apply to your skin are a mild cleanser, a moisturizer (I prefer using Aquaphor) and a broad spectrum sunscreen. A possible side effect is you may experience mild irritation, itchiness and inflammation. This is normal and as a nurse I suggest oral Benadryl. Always resist the urge to rub, pick or pull at the peeling skin. It is extremely important for you to let it flake off naturally to avoid scarring and further irritation.

At the end of the process you will achieve brighter, beautiful fresh skin. Call today to schedule a free consultation with me and together we can develop the right treatment plan for you.

Want natural looking glowing skin? Night time skincare is a must.

Posted March 2nd, 2017 by Schendens Med Spa and filed in Skin Care, Skin Rejuvination
Comments Off on Want natural looking glowing skin? Night time skincare is a must.

As a licensed aesthetician, registered nurse and professional body builder, I’m often asked how I get my skin to have a natural glow and look great without makeup. Night time skin care is the answer. My favorite at home tool is my Clarisonic™ cleansing brush. Its rotating bristles remove all the dirt and oils as well as dead skin cells. Skincueticals® LHA Cleanser is my go to product to use with my Clarisonic. Designed for aging skin prone to breakouts, LHA cleansing gel combines potent cleansing agents with LHA, (Lipohydroxy acid which decreases bacteria found within the pores), glycolic acid and salicylic acid to decongest pores, smooth irregularities and brighten skin. I recommend a skin consultation to find the right products for your skin type.

After your skin is cleaned properly it is time to apply a retinol. It is best to apply retinol on clean, bare skin. Retinol is a form of retinoid, a derivative of vitamin A. It’s commonly used to give your skin a healthy boost by minimizing fine lines and wrinkles, smoothing texture, and diminishing hyperpigmentation and dark spots.

Finally, a moisturizer, depending on the season and your skin type. I prefer a heavier cream in the winter when I am drier such as LaRoche-Posay™ Substiane and Neocutis™. BioGel hydrating gel in the summer months.

You too can achieve lighter, brighter skin. Call today to schedule a free consultation with me and together we can develop the right treatment plan for you. 248-524- 3622.
