In today’s world unfortunately cancer is a word we hear too often. Although treatments are always improving the process can not only be stressful on your body but also your mind. It is often hard to relax or find relief. Oncology massage is a specialized massage that provides some relief to the many side effects that can occur during treatment. Oncology Massage is provided by a certified oncology massage therapist. It is very important that the massage therapist is educated in the protocols when involving the treatments of cancer such a radiation, chemotherapy and surgery.

Always consult with your doctor and receive his/her written permission if currently undergoing treatment. There are certain contraindications to consider before massage can be administered and the more the massage therapist knows about a patient, the more effective the treatment can be.

Side effects caused by conventional treatments may be reduced by providing relaxation to the body reducing stress, anxiety, nausea, fatigue and many see improvement in sleep and digestion. Through a variety of types of pressure and touch, massage may also help to increase mobility and relief of stiffness and pain.

If you have completed treatment and in good health, the massage therapist will go over your health and treatment history and adjust the session to keep you safe. Together, you and your therapist will agree on goals for the session that insures the continued healing of your body.

I am fully trained in oncology massage and enjoy helping individuals through this difficult time. Set up a free consultation today and let me help you on the road to recovery.

Comments Off on Out with the bad habits and into the New Year with Beautiful skin

The New Year gives us all a chance to start fresh. It’s time to make a commitment to our skin. We all ensure our hair is styled, colored and cut, our nails are trim, buffed and polished but what have we done for our skin? Run out the door without sunscreen? Fall asleep with our makeup on or still using the same products we did when we were in our twenties? It’s time for a change.

AM Prep –apply topical protectants such as antioxidants, hydrants and sunscreen, Note vulnerable areas, our hands and décolleté, these areas need sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher!

PM Prep– wash away environmental toxins and impurities in addition to products worn throughout the day. Apply the appropriate pm products.

Must have products include growth factors, retinols, and vitamin C to boost collagen production, skin elasticity and thickness.

Remember to hydrate, get at least 8 hours a sleep per night, eat clean to avoid breakouts and decrease salt to prevent puffiness.

Vinylux vs Shellac

Posted April 17th, 2017 by Schendens Med Spa and filed in Shellac Manicure
Comments Off on Vinylux vs Shellac

Nail polish is the critical component needed for a girl to get a manicure. With the popularity of nail design soaring more so today, than ever before, the competitive market for polish has sky rocketed. That being said, your average woman wants to schedule an appointment to indulge herself at the spa, she is already overwhelmed by the impressive color wall that you have to offer her, but has no insight on the product available to her. You ask her, “shellac, vinylux, or polish?” a quizzical look will pop up onto her face, and she will just agree with the first option you presented her with. What is the difference?

Vinylux provides one full week of wear, enhanced durability, and self adhering Color Coat followed by Vinylux Top Coat to shield and protect the Color Coat, for a chip-free, high-shine wear. It dries in 8 ½ minutes, and removes easily with a moisturizing acetone remover. There is no need for a base coat, and it will not stain healthy nails. For dry or peeling nails, a thin layer of RidgeFX will be applied prior to Vinylux application. Vinylux is designed to work like a regular polish; no lamp needed, and colors can be mixed together to create new colors.
Shellac provides 14+ day wear, high gloss shine, zero dry time, and removal in 5 minutes with a moisturizing acetone remover. Shellac 14+ day nail color has a three step process.

  • Shellac Base Coat is applied and cured for 10 seconds in a LED or UV lamp.
  • Shellac Color Coat is applied and cured for 1 minute in a LED lamp, or 2 minutes in a UV lamp.
  • Shellac Top Coats (2) should be cured for 1 minute in a LED lamp, or 2 minutes in a UV lamp, and can be used with additives, nail art, and embellishments.

For those sensitive to nail products, all Shellac products are formulated without toluene, camphor, formaldehyde, phthalates (DBP), formaldehyde resin, xylene, or methyl ethyl ketone (MEK).

Shellac has an effortless glide on application, 14+ days of high shine, and high performance, with no nail damage. Removal time is based on the Shellac Top Coat used during application; Express Shellac can be removed in 5 minutes, original Shellac in 8 minutes, and Duraforce in 15 minutes.

The next time you’re thinking about getting your nails done, consider making your appointment here at Schenden’s Medical Day Spa in Troy, you will not be disappointed in the selection of product we have to offer, our service and the quiet, professional atmosphere.

Interested in a Chemical Peel? Do your homework!

Comments Off on Interested in a Chemical Peel? Do your homework!

As an aesthetic registered nurse and licensed aesthetician I can’t stress enough the importance of good skin care and finding the right treatment provider. Especially if you’re considering having a chemical peel. My number one recommendation is for clients to do their homework. There are multiple spas in any given area but it is important to find a Medical Spa which requires a Medical Director to ensure that you are receiving a medical grade product and oversight.

Schedule a Consultation
I like to meet with a prospective patient and discuss their goals in order to determine which chemical peel will be right for their skin. A chemical peel improves skin texture, pigmentation and can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. All consultations are free of charge and allow me to understand your aesthetic goals and assess your skin.

Construct a Plan
We will discuss the amount of time necessary and what type of peel I would recommend based on desired outcome aggressive/ cautious and skin type. Lastly, what will be needed at home? To achieve optimum results you need to use the right skincare products both before and after the peel. These products work in conjunction with the peel.

Check Your Schedule
If you are planning on a more aggressive peel, my suggestion to all my patients is to not schedule any special events until your skin is finished with the peeling process. Your skin will usually start to shed 2-3 days after treatment and can last up to 7, depending on the type/strength of the chemical peel. During the peeling process, the only products you’ll want to apply to your skin are a mild cleanser, a moisturizer (I prefer using Aquaphor) and a broad spectrum sunscreen. A possible side effect is you may experience mild irritation, itchiness and inflammation. This is normal and as a nurse I suggest oral Benadryl. Always resist the urge to rub, pick or pull at the peeling skin. It is extremely important for you to let it flake off naturally to avoid scarring and further irritation.

At the end of the process you will achieve brighter, beautiful fresh skin. Call today to schedule a free consultation with me and together we can develop the right treatment plan for you.

Want natural looking glowing skin? Night time skincare is a must.

Comments Off on Want natural looking glowing skin? Night time skincare is a must.

As a licensed aesthetician, registered nurse and professional body builder, I’m often asked how I get my skin to have a natural glow and look great without makeup. Night time skin care is the answer. My favorite at home tool is my Clarisonic™ cleansing brush. Its rotating bristles remove all the dirt and oils as well as dead skin cells. Skincueticals® LHA Cleanser is my go to product to use with my Clarisonic. Designed for aging skin prone to breakouts, LHA cleansing gel combines potent cleansing agents with LHA, (Lipohydroxy acid which decreases bacteria found within the pores), glycolic acid and salicylic acid to decongest pores, smooth irregularities and brighten skin. I recommend a skin consultation to find the right products for your skin type.

After your skin is cleaned properly it is time to apply a retinol. It is best to apply retinol on clean, bare skin. Retinol is a form of retinoid, a derivative of vitamin A. It’s commonly used to give your skin a healthy boost by minimizing fine lines and wrinkles, smoothing texture, and diminishing hyperpigmentation and dark spots.

Finally, a moisturizer, depending on the season and your skin type. I prefer a heavier cream in the winter when I am drier such as LaRoche-Posay™ Substiane and Neocutis™. BioGel hydrating gel in the summer months.

You too can achieve lighter, brighter skin. Call today to schedule a free consultation with me and together we can develop the right treatment plan for you. 248-524- 3622.

Do you want natural looking eyebrows?

Comments Off on Do you want natural looking eyebrows?

Many of us are not blessed with the perfect eyebrow and with the ever changing beauty trends it is hard to know what’s in thin, full, or arched brows. There is now a new tattoo technique that will give you the look you desire and the look that many will not know is a tattoo. Microblading uses a hand-held tattoo pen with a unique blade to create very fine, precise hair like strokes. This technique offers a very natural looking brow. Older techniques can look stamped or be too thick. With microblading the pigment is placed more superficially in the skin therefore, results will last a year to 18 months, making it the ideal treatment with this ever-changing eyebrow phenomenon that we are obsessed with.

Our aesthetician Rose has performed brow tattooing for over 15 years and is highly qualified to perform microblading.

Call today for your free consultation and let Rose help you achieve the perfect brow.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning, is an excellent exfoliating treatment that is used as an alternative or in conjunction with a chemical peel or microdermabrasion. It is a good choice for anyone who has fine facial hair, extremely sensitive skin, redness or rosacea, or visible facial veins. The dermaplaning treatment is done with the use of a blade to gently exfoliate the outer layer of dead skin cells and remove fine facial hair commonly known as “peach fuzz”. A noticeable improvement is immediate with smoother texture and fresh skin appearance. Hair returns normally and will not become coarser because of the treatment.

Removing this outer layer skin also allows products to penetrate more readily into the deeper layers. Physicians recommend this treatment to prepare the skin for medical procedures such as laser treatments or deep chemical peels.

Dermaplaning is most often used on patients with rough or dry skin, superficial hyperpigmentation, mild acne scarring, or fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment results in a more refined, smooth, “glowing” appearance without any down time.

Most commonly asked questions:

Why doesn’t the hair grow back thicker?
Fine facial “peach fuzz” is one of the two types of hair that everyone has. It’s called vellous hair and is the fine translucent hair that you can see if you look closely on women’s face, chest and back. The other type of hair is terminal hair, which is the coarser hair you see on the head, brows, and on the lower face in men. Cutting vellous hair does not make it grow in thicker or feel stubbly afterwards.

How often is this procedure performed?
The normal skin growth cycle is around 30 days and since dermaplaning removes about 2-3 weeks-worth of dead skin cells, it’s best to wait about 3-4 weeks between treatments.

Can dermaplaning be performed in the same visit as a chemical peel?
A chemical peel done immediately after dermaplaning is an excellent way to make sure that the peel penetrates deeper and more evenly. Lactic acid peels will hydrate and further exfoliate dry and normal skin while a glycolic acid peel is strong enough to combine with dermaplaning for oily skin.

What skin types/conditions can be treated?
All skin types are candidates for dermaplaning. The only skin that shouldn’t be treated with dermaplaning is skin with active bacterial spread or skin injury.

How to use Endermologie or SmoothShapes to combat Cellulite

What are your options to combat Cellulite?

Warm weather is on its way and so is the pressure to look ones best in a bathing suit this summer, which is why we are getting a lot of inquiries about cellulite treatment options. The two non-surgical options to consider are SmoothShapes or Endermologie which both combat cellulite issues– but what is the difference and which treatment is right for you?

Endermologie uses two adjustable rollers to symmetrically fold the skin while providing controlled suction. Think of it more like a “medical massage” of the whole-body not simply on “problem areas” alone. The subcutaneous fat is what is being targeted during treatment because it is resistant to diet and exercise and even liposuction. A minimum of 10 treatments are recommended, with full results showing after 20 treatments. Maintenance sessions should be scheduled once every four weeks.

The newest member to the cellulite scene is SmoothShapes. Like Endermologie, SmoothShapes utilizes massage from the rollers along with controlled suction; however, what sets it apart is its use of two different lasers during treatment. The first laser delivers energy to the subcutaneous fat cells to increase their permeability, while the other affects the lipids inside the fat cells. A minimum of 8 sessions is the recommended protocol. But unlike Endermologie, maintenance sessions are not required until 4-6 months after the completion of your initial treatment cycle, with one follow-up treatment every 3 months.

Both are excellent treatment options but how do you determine which option is more suited for you? Simple answer – after a thorough evaluation and private consultation with one of our trained professionals. If you have any questions regarding these treatment options or other cellulite options such as SmartLipo/Laser Liposuction or to schedule a private consultation contact 248-524-3622.

What is Rejuvapen Micro Needling?

Rejuvapen is an amazing breakthrough in skin care that yields amazing results quickly with almost no downtime. It is becoming more increasingly popular among patients and for various reasons.  It is quick, no real down time, and note worthy results.   So, what is this new micro-needling treatment, and how does it work?   Rejuvapen’s nine precisely spaced micro needles create tiny perforations in the top two layers of the skin. The skin shifts its repair mechanism into high gear, producing collagen and elastin to mend these micro-perforations. This is a 100% natural form of skin renewal, repairing from the inside out. Your skin will be firmer and regain its elasticity, so fine lines and wrinkles become visibly reduced, pores are smaller, and creates younger looking skin.

Skin becomes firmer, regains its elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles are visibly reduced, pores are smaller and circulation is stimulated so the overall condition and appearance of the skin improves. Rejuvapen addresses fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, hyper-pigmentation and skin texture by stimulating the skin’s natural ability to produce new collagen formation creating healthier skin. You can treat the forehead, around the eyes, cheeks, around the mouth, neck and chest are treated most often, but Rejuvapen can be used on problem areas like surgical scarring to reduce prominence.

The treatment takes approximately 30-60 minutes depending on the treatment area. Typically the patient will come into the spa approximately 30 minutes early to apply numbing cream.  Most patients look as though they have a moderate to severe sunburn and your skin may feel warmer and tighter than usual. This is normal and will subside in 1-2 hours. Most patients recover in less than 24 hours, with minimal discomfort.

The initial reaction is that our patients love the treatment. They can immediately feel improvement and a firmness to their skin. Most patients will notice visible results after the first treatment, and results improve after subsequent treatments. It is recommended to have 3-4 treatments for optimal results.
